Meditation on creation, non-creation (नासदीय सूक्तम्)

नासदीय सूक्तम्

This Suuktam  is from Rigveda and is attributed to Prajaapathi ( प्रजापति);  there are seven verses in this Suuktam. This is  a good meditation on the "before" creation.

नासदासीत् नः सदासीत् तदानीम् नासीद् रजः नः व्योमा परः यत् ।
किम् आवरीवः कुह कस्य शर्मन् अन्भः  किमासीद् गहनम् गभीरम् ॥१

नासदासीत्  Unmanifest did not exist
नः सदासीत् manifest did not exist
तदानीम्  at that time
नासीद् रजः passion, energy did not exist
नः व्योमा परः यत्  Neither sky  or other existed
किम् आवरीवः what about quarters (or coverings since quarters cover)
कुह कस्य where, of what
शर्मन् bliss (did not exist)
 अन्भः किमासीद् sound existed (why)

Un-manifest did not exist, manifest did not exist. At that time energy did not exist, either sky or the other did not exist; Quarters did not exist, where of what did not exist; bliss did not exist; atmosphere did not exist; darkness, depth did not exist. There is sound.

न मृत्युः आसीद् अमृतं न तर्हि न रात्र्या अह्नं आसीत् प्रकेतः ।
आनीदवातं स्वधया तदेकं तस्माद्धान्यन् न परः किं चनास ॥ २
न मृत्युः आसीद् Death did not exist
अमृतं न तर्हि Absence of death did not exist at that time
न रात्र्या अह्नं आसीत् प्रकेतः no sign of day and night existing
आन no air (existed)
आन breathing

स्वधया by its own power; by itself
तदेकं that One
तस्मात् therefore
धा holding as in धारण
अन्यन् for the other
न परः किं what no separate (existence) ?
चनास: also to abide in (we use आस to mean a seat the One wanted another to sit near to or to abide in)

Death did not exist and absence of death did not exist. Neither day or night existed. The breathing One meditated for the other  to abide in. There is no air to breath.
